Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
In this method, hair grafts are removed from the donor area in the form of strips and placed in the transplantation area. Although the FUT technique has generally left its place to the FUE method, the FUT technique may be preferred from time to time.
How is FUT Technique Applied ?
- In the FUT technique, the donor area is anesthetized with local anesthesia to collect the hair follicles. The donor area is usually the nape area where the hair follicles are stronger.
- A rectangular piece of approximately 15 cm x 2 cm is cut and removed from the anesthetized donor area. The size of the area to be cut may vary according to the area of the hair transplant area.
- The piece of skin taken from the donor area is separated under the microscope by the nurses in order to separate the hair follicles in it and carefully prepare it for hair transplantation. The grafts separated from the skin piece are kept in a special solution to continue their vitality and development.
- While the collected grafts are being prepared for plantation, the opened donor area is closed and wrapped with aesthetic sutures. After the healing process, which will take approximately 20 days to 1 month, a horizontal suture scar will remain in the donor area. One of the disadvantages of the FUT technique is that there is a permanent suture scar in the donor area after the operation.
- After the grafts are collected, the hair transplantation process is started. At this stage, local anesthesia is applied to the area to be planted. After the area to be transplanted is anesthetized, channels are opened as much as the number of grafts removed. These channels are needle-sized holes where hair follicles will be placed.
- After the channels are opened, hair follicles are placed in these channels and the hair transplantation process is completed.
In Which Situations Is FUT Technique Preferred?
Due to the advancement of technology, the prevalence of the FUT method has decreased over time. Sometimes it can be preferred in special cases.
These special cases are:
– The physician you refer to may only be using the FUT method.
– If there is very little hair in the donor area, this technique may be recommended by your doctor in order to collect more grafts.
– If the person needs a small number of grafts, the FUT method can be used.
– It can be preferred because it is cheaper than other methods.
At Ozhair Hair Transplantation Center, we do not perform operations with the FUT technique, as Dr Ozcan uses cutting-edge techniques instead of FUT technique.
Advantages of FUT Technique
- – Since the grafts are not collected one by one, the FUT method is very fast. This is a sufficient reason for preference for patients with limited time. Hair transplantation can be performed on people with insufficient donor area. Hair transplantation can be performed without shaving the hair. The hair follicle removed with special methods is not exposed to trauma.
- – When the collected grafts are cleared of other tissue pieces, the channels to be opened for planting the hair in the area to be transplanted will be smaller. With the small channels, the blood circulation will not deteriorate, and the transplanted hair follicles will grow faster.
- – There is almost no trace of surgery, especially in people with white hair.
Disadvantages of FUT Technique
- – Postoperative suture scar remains. There is a risk of infection if the stitches are not sutured.
- – Since pieces of the scalp are removed, there may be numbness or numbness after the operation.
- – Losses may occur in grafts on the removed skin.
- – Swelling may occur around the eyes.
- – There may be tension as a piece of skin is removed from the donor area.
- – When a hair transplant operation is required for the second time, a new suture scar is formed.
- – The healing process takes a little longer.
- – There may be pain after the operation due to stitches.
- – The donor area healing process progresses slowly compared to other techniques.

FUE vs FUT
FUE TECHNIQUE | FUT TECHNIQUE |
Haircut is done. | Haircut is not done. |
Hair follicles are taken one by one with 0.8-0.9 mm punch without any incision. | Hair follicles are taken together with the cut skin. The cut strips are cut into pieces and placed in the planting area. |
Since there is no incision, there is very little bleeding. | There may be heavy bleeding from the incisions. |
There is no need for stitches in the donor area. | Since the incision is made in the donor area, sutures are taken. Stitches should be removed 1 week after the procedure. |
High density plantations can be done. | When the number of grafts is limited, the transplant density is low. |
Since quality hair follicles are selected and taken, 100% planting takes place. | Since the roots taken as strips it cannot be completely extracted, approximately 80% of the planting takes place. |
The risk of infection is very low. | Infection may occur in the suture area. |
It is very low to feel pain during the healing process in the donor area. | It is possible that it will be painful due to the stitches. |
The recovery period of the donor area is short. | The donor area heals later. |
No scars remain after the procedure. | After the procedure, the scar of the incision remains. |
It is possible to use other parts of the body as donor sites. | Only the nape area can be used as a donor area. |
